Abstract
The invention relates to stilbene derivatives which are used as optical brightening agents, particularly as anionic brightening agents for polyamide and cellulosic substrates. These stilbene derivatives have the formula I ##STR1## in which both X's are the same and are CR.sub.5 or N, where R.sub.5 is hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or phenyl; both Y's are the same and are each one of the radicals of benzofuran, triazole, pyrazole, dibenzofuran or dibenzothiophene and benzothiophene, and R.sub.1 is as defined in the specification.

Claims
What is claimed is:

1. A compound of the formula ##STR86## in which both R.sub.1 's are the same and are hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, bromine, chlorine, --COOM, --CONR.sub.2 R.sub.3, --COOR.sub.4, --CN, --SO.sub.3 M, --SO.sub.2 NR.sub.2 R.sub.3 or --SO.sub.2 R.sub.4, where R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or phenyl with the proviso that only one may be phenyl or R.sub.2 and R.sub.3, together with the nitrogen to which they are attached, form piperidine or morpholine ring and R.sub.4 is C.sub.1-4 alkyl or phenyl;

both X's are the same and are CR.sub.5 or N, where R.sub.5 is hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or phenyl;

both Y's are the same and are each one of the radicals of formulae (a) to (e) ##STR87## with the proviso that the Y's are not radical (b) when X=N, R.sub.6 is hydrogen, chlorine, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, --SO.sub.3 M or phenyl, R.sub.7 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl, R.sub.8 is an aryl radical unsubstituted or substituted by up to two substituents selected from C.sub.1-4 alkyl, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, chlorine, cyano, --COOM, --COOR.sub.4, --CONR.sub.2 R.sub.3, --SO.sub.2 NR.sub.2 R.sub.3, --SO.sub.2 R.sub.4 and --SO.sub.3 M with the proviso that where the aryl radical is substituted by two substituents at least one of the substituents is C.sub.1-4 alkyl, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy or chlorine, R.sub.9 and R.sub.10 independently are hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl; R.sub.12 is H or --SO.sub.3 M and Z is O or S; and

Description
The invention relates to stilbene derivatives.

The invention provides compounds of formula I, ##STR2## in which both R.sub.1 's are the same and are hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, bromine, chlorine, --COOM, --CONR.sub.2 R.sub.3, --COOR.sub.4, --CN, --SO.sub.3 M, --SO.sub.2 NR.sub.2 R.sub.3 or --SO.sub.2 R.sub.4, where R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or phenyl with the proviso that only one may be phenyl or R.sub.2 and R.sub.3, together with the nitrogen to which they are attached, form a five or six membered heterocyclic ring and R.sub.4 is C.sub.1-4 alkyl or phenyl;

both X's are the same and are CR.sub.5 or N, where R.sub.5 is hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or phenyl;

both Y's are the same and are each one of the radicals of formulae (a) to (e) ##STR3## with the proviso that the Y's are not radical (b) when X=N, R.sub.6 is hydrogen, chlorine, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, --SO.sub.3 M or phenyl, R.sub.7 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl, R.sub.8 is an aryl radical unsubstituted or substitued by up to two substituents selected from C.sub.1-4 alkyl, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, chlorine, cyano, --COOM, --COOR.sub.4, --CONR.sub.2 R.sub.3, --SO.sub.2 NR.sub.2 R.sub.3, --SO.sub.2 R.sub.4 and --SO.sub.3 M with the proviso that where the aryl radical is substituted by two substituents at least one of the substituents is C.sub.1-4 alkyl, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy or chlorine, R.sub.9 and R.sub.10 independently are hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl; R.sub.12 is H or --SO.sub.3 M and Z is O or S; and
