Abstract
An electrical connector pick-up station for use in feeding electrical connectors from a magazine into an electrical connector transfer nest, for transfer to a work station, comprises a cable supporting the magazine, a seat for the nest having guide rollers for guiding the nest onto the seat, and a feed ram which is movable under the base of the magazine to insert a connector into the nest. The ram is provided with an end for engaging the connector to insert it, and a guide plate extending beyond that end for guiding the connector into a predetermined position in the nest, in which position it is releasably latched in the nest. Where the connectors are provided with mating covers, the guide plate acts as a separator which extends between the connector and its cover so that these are inserted into the nest in properly spaced relationship.

Claims
We claim:

1. An electrical connector pick-up station comprising:

a table;

guide means on the table for receiving an electrical connector transfer nest to be loaded with an electrical connector;

means for engaging the nest to retain it in the guide means and simultaneously disconnecting the nest from a robot arm by which the nest is carried;

a storage magazine for accommodating a stack of electrical connectors, mounted on the table and having a passage therebeneath;

an electrical connector insertion ram having a connector engaging end and being slidably mounted on the table for movement along a path extending through said passage towards said guide means in a connector feed direction;

Description
This invention relates to an electrical connector pick-up station for use in feeding electrical connectors from a magazine, into an electrical connector transfer nest, for transfer to a work station, for example, to a press for acting on the nest to secure a connector therein, to a cable.

The nest may conveniently be transported from the pick-up station to the work station on an arm of a robot.

As described below, the nest is provided with means for releasably retaining a connector therein, in such a position in the nest that the cable can be inserted between the connector and means in the nest for stuffing the cable conductors into conductor receiving portions of terminals of the connector. The connector must therefore be fed into the nest so as to be accurately positioned for retention in the nest by the connector retaining means therein.

According to the invention, the connector pick-up station comprises a table provided with guide means for receiving the nest and with means for releasably retaining the nest between the guide means, so that the nest is held in a fixed position for the feeding of a connector thereinto. A magazine on the table is arranged to accommodate a stack of electrical connectors and may also be arranged to accommodate a stack of covers which are matable with the connectors or have been partially mated therewith. A ram which is slidably mounted on the table, is arranged to be passed through a passage beneath the magazine, which passage is adjacent to the table, so as to feed a connector and a cover therefor, if provided, into the nest. The ram has a connector engaging end portion for pushing the connector from the magazine into the nest, and may also have a cover engaging end portion for pushing a cover from the magazine into the nest. In order that the connector should be correctly located in the nest, guide means are provided on the ram or the table, which may be applied also to locate a cover in the nest in spaced relationship with respect to the connector. Drive means are provided for driving the ram along its path of movement.
