Abstract
A processing apparatus for tissue specimens, e.g. for histological examination, comprises a vessel defining a vapor space above heating means and a receptacle for volatile processing liquid and, near the upper end of that space, means for condensing vapor in the upper part of the space and for returning condensate to the liquid receptacle. Specimens are processed by suspension in the vapor space. There may be two or more receptacles for different processing liquids and means for moving these receptacles selectively between an accommodation space in the vessel and an operative position. Means is provided for sealing the vessel and for varying the atmospheric pressure therein. The apparatus further contains a heated wax bath for wax impregnation of processed specimens.

Claims
I claim:

1. Tissue processing apparatus comprising

(a) a vessel defining a vapor space;

(b) means for sealing the vapor space to enable the atmospheric pressure within the vapor space to be adjusted;

(c) a receptacle for a volatile processing liquid;

(d) heating means for vaporizing the processing liquid in the receptacle,

(1) the vapor space being arranged to receive the processing liquid vapor from the receptacle;

(e) means near an upper end of the vapor space for effecting condensation of the vapor in the upper vapor space end;

(f) means for returning the condensate to the receptacle;

(g) an openwork basket adapted to hold tissue specimens to be processed;

Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION

This invention concerns apparatus for the processing of histological and like tissue specimens and has for its object the provision of an apparatus having certain advantages in comparison with the conventional apparatus used for processing tissue specimens.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

In accordance with the present invention, tissue processing apparatus comprises a vessel defining a vapour space above a receptacle for volatile processing liquid, heating means for vaporising the volatile processing liquid in the receptacle and, near the upper end of the vapour space, means for effecting condensation of vapour in the upper part of the vapour space and for returning condensate to the receptacle.

The apparatus preferably includes at least two receptacles for different volatile liquids and means for bringing a selected receptacle into position for cooperation with the heating means; thus the vapour space may be selectively charged with the vapour of two or more different fluids.
