Abstract
A cord cutter head for use in, for example, a cord cutter type grass trimmer has a housing having which is provided with a downwardly directed opening, and a spool carrying a flexible cutter cord wound thereon. The spool is formed integrally with the housing such that its lower end portion is projected under the housing through the downward opening. The housing has an aperture formed in the wall thereof and adapted to allow the unwound cutter cord to be extracted outside therethrough. The user can rewind the cutter cord from the exposed portion of the spool by his fingers without difficulty.

Claims
What is claimed is:

1. A cord cutter head comprising:

a housing having a downwardly directed opening;

a spool formed integrally with said housing and comprising a lower end portion for holding a part of a flexible cutter cord thereon, said lower end portion projecting downwardly from said housing through said opening so as to be exposed outside the cutter head and to expose the part of the flexible cutter cord wound thereon;

and an apparatus formed in the wall of said housing and adapted to allow the portion of the cutter unwound from the spool to pass therethrough;

said housing and said spool comprising means for providing access to the cord so that a user can rewind or otherwise handle the cutter cord on said spool at the exposed lower end portion of said spool.

Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention:

The present invention relates to a cord cutter head for use in, for example, a grass trimmer.

2. Description of the Prior Art:

In general, a cutter head has a flexible cord made of a plastic such as nylon and adapted to serve as a cutter blade. The cord cutter head also has a housing fixed to one end of a drive shaft, and a spool accommodated by the housing and carrying the cutter cord wound thereon. In operation, the free end of the cutter cord is extracted by a desired length out of the housing. The drive shaft is drivingly connected to a suitable power source such as a small-sized internal combustion engine, through a suitable transmission.

When the cutter cord outside the housing has been worn out or cut accidentally, it is necessary to extract a new portion of the cutter cord from the housing. Hitherto, the additional extraction of the new portion of the cutter head was conducted semi-automatically by means of, for example, a device generally referred to as an "inertia shifter".
